Housing
London and Middlesex County offer a wide range of housing options. Whether you are looking for city or country living, long-term or short-term housing, you're sure to find a place to call home.
City and country living both have their benefits. People who live in the city are usually attracted to the wide variety of services and activities nearby. People who live in the country prefer quiet, open spaces.
After choosing country or city, your next step is to decide what type of home you want. Canadians typically live in three types of homes: single detached houses, town houses or condominiums/apartments. All can be rented or bought.
A single detached house sits on its own piece of land (called a lot). The advantages of owning this type of home include privacy, high re-sale value and the ability to make structural adjustments.
A town house is a home that is attached to the homes next to it. A town house owner owns the property directly to the front and to the back of the home. Town houses have the advantage of enhanced security and less exterior maintenance. Some share amenities like swimming pools and tennis courts.
A condominium or apartment is usually the least expensive housing option. An apartment is a condominium that you rent. Complexes can range from a few units in a small building to a large tower with hundreds of units. Condominiums and apartments are usually located in dense urban areas within walking or cycling distance of recreational facilities, shops, markets and other conveniences.
Choosing whether to rent or buy usually depends on how long you plan on staying in the home and how much money you have to spend. You can find more information about renting at Housing: Short-Term. You can learn more about buying a home at Housing: Long-Term.
