Ontario

Ontario is Canada's most multicultural province. Over 12 million people from 200 countries live here and more than 130 languages are spoken. Half of all immigrants to Canada choose Ontario as their new home.

Big city excitement combined with medium and small towns, hundreds of provincial parks, beautiful lakes and forests make Ontario yours to discover. Ontario will provide cultural and recreational possibilities for everyone. From big sports events, first-rate theatre, or witnessing the beauty of four magnificent seasons, Ontario truly has something for everyone.

Many opportunities exist for newcomers to southwestern Ontario and in particular London. With a strong and diversified economy, the area is called the "heartland of Ontario" and is destined to become one of the best places to locate in North America.

Provincial elections in Ontario are held every four years. Candidates run for election in each of the 103 electoral districts, ridings or constituencies. Similar to the federal government, the candidate who receives the most votes in each electoral district becomes a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP). MPPs represent their electoral district in the governing body of Ontario, called the Legislative Assembly or "the house". This body of government determines policies and laws at Queen's Park in downtown Toronto.

Ontario has several official political parties. The political party having the highest number of elected MPPs within the 103 electoral districts forms the Ontario Government. The Lieutenant Governor, who acts as the province's head of state, asks the leader of the winning political party to be the Premier of Ontario. The Premier chooses the Cabinet of Ontario that will develop policies and set priorities.
