City of London
London is Canada's 10th largest centre. Located in the heart of southwestern Ontario, London is clean, safe and culturally diverse. A skilled workforce and dynamic industry sectors fuel our energetic economy. London is a welcoming and attractive city with world-class health care, excellent parks and recreation facilities, affordable cost of living, great entertainment and short commute times.
The economy is dominated by locomotive production, insurance and information technology. The University of Western Ontario is responsible for developing much of the of life sciences and biotechnology related research that occurs in the city. London is also positioned next to the 401 highway which provides a gateway to many cities in Ontario and the United States of America.
London continues to enhance cultural and artistic representation within the city. The Creative City Task Force, established by London City Council, has taken steps to promote the growth and economic success of London by securing many knowledge-intensive industries. These include film and television, publishing, information technology, biomedical research, education and new media.
The City of London also believes in cultural diversity. The London Diversity and Race Relations Committee (LDRRAC) and the Cultural Diversity Conference continue to recognize how newcomers to London will help assist in building the strong economic foundations of tomorrow.
The City of London's government is called city council and its leader is the Mayor. Other elected members include Deputy Mayor, controllers and councillors.
Local government in London is elected to manage services such as police and fire protection, recreation, public transportation, garbage and waste reduction, emergency services and construction and building. Local government does not have constitutional powers, but is given responsibilities by the federal and provincial governments.
All members of city council are elected directly and are not representatives of political parties in Ontario or Canada. The City of London has 14 councillors, one representing each ward.
